Palid nods, and rambles abit about his dream to one day be a well versed and read arch mage, not even famous. Quite... more talkative as time goes on, and prone to shy ramlbings. And just how much he wants to be an arch mage one day.
His Brother does tend to listen to the book wormism of his brother, going to stand near the lake lifting his lantern to look, given it's a fantasy world and the dark of night, that lake could probably look like a black abyss.

Paldonna just watched Palid as he talked on. She looked like she had no clue what he was talking about - more like she didn't understand the love of books more than anything.

"Hydra's, Lizard-men, Turtle Dragons that run through and steal maidens."
Atherius nodded his head, before tilting his head to think.
"I -think- Sirens and Mermaids are a thing still, right? I mean, they were where I came from at the very least--... I think?"
Shrugging at his inquiry, Atherius returned to his soft humming, filling the creak with his continued chanting. Adding a whistle from time-to-time, to give a change of pitch to liven up their adventurous stroll.

Paldonna nods. "And I've heard legends of Sirens and Mermaids... Terrible, they sound." She shivers under her hood.

Palid respond.
"Those two are more Sea water dwellers, lakes often don't hit the size of habitat to keep them fed."

"Either way, they don't sound as lovely as the legends describe them to be..." Paldonna muttered.

Palid nods.
"Palid since they tend to be carnivores... it's uhhm bad, yes?"

Paldonna stabbed her spear into the ground, leaning on it. "Alright, no offense, but why -do- you want to be this mage... scholar... thing so much? Isn't it all scrolls and charts?"

Vellian looked behind her finally, staring at the rest of the group, chuckling to lighten the mood. "Well, what are the chances that we'll get attacked by these creatures? Lighten up-"
And that's when a roar came. Echoing from the depths, very reptilian in nature, as bubbles fizzed up from the lake for its emergence.
"Hell and earth- everyone get down!"
Vellian hit the ground, landing solidly on her chest and watching as the creature emerged, head-first out of the water.

Palid waves to her to keep up as they walk.
"Because... it's knowledge, and great... and who doesn't?"

"Someone who can't re-" She stops her sentence at seeing the bubbling creature. "What on earth..." She snatches her spear up again, keeping a firm grip on it, already aimed to defend.

Frederick goes to lower his posture, holding the lantern knowing he's most likly the easily targeted drawing his blade and holding out out waiting a pounce, as Palid goes to stand over near the woman who looks to be the least direct fighter of the group infront of the huntress. Shield up and stolen ax ready.

Paldonna crouched a bit lower to the ground, her feet planting in the soft earth, waiting until the creature fully emerged from the wet depths.

Atherius continued his stance. Moving his sword off of his shoulder, he pointed the greatsword forwards, tip shinning from any source of light as he pointed towards where the sound was coming from, or at least where he thought it was. Breathing in and out, his eyes dilated on his target, with his muscles tensing and becoming soothed all at the same time. It's not like he could properly crouch anyway, with all of his unsubtle plate-armor.

Paldonna mutters to Palid. "What is that thing? You've listed a few... Atherius had said several that were in lakes..."

Slowly, bit by bit, it emerged, revealing a scaly blue hide with red fins sliding along its neck... actually, necks. Two more slightly smaller heads poked out of the water as well, each of their mouths dripping with poison spit- a common trait for lake hydras. It let out another roar and stood up, looking around the lake with its eyes. It stood at about fifteen feet tall at its tallest height, surfacing from the depths onto the land.
"Who knew this lake had a damned hydra?"
Vellian turned, whispering to her friends/acquaintances.

Paldonna's mouth dropped at the sight of the creature. Sure, she was a hunter, but she also said she wasn't a water hunter. This creature was very new to her. She stood motionless, hoping not to instantly be seen by the dangerous creature.

Palid stammers, clearly never having seen a monster in person.
"F..f..f..fire... seals the neck... r... wound from gr...growing more heads.. do.. we.. have oil and rags? If not.. aim .. aim for the body."

Paldonna urged him on, having no patience in a time like this. "Say it, say it! Don't cut the heads? Aim for the body?" She said in a hoarse whisper.

"Or, better yet, leave it to hunt and don't attract its attention."
Vellian shook her head at Palid.
"Look at the size of it. We can't take a monster that size down- it'll swallow us whole."
